January 2026 Newsletter Highlights: Community Stories and Accreditation Milestones
As we step into 2026, Food Banks of Saskatchewan is proud to share highlights from our January newsletter, celebrating community generosity, meaningful impact, and progress across the food bank network.
Community Impact: Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre
The Battlefords Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) has a long-standing history of bringing the community together to support families in need during the holiday season. Beginning in the 1950s through CJNB radio, the initiative has grown into a cherished tradition that continues today through the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre (BDFRC).
As a registered charity, BDFRC proudly carries this tradition forward by providing Christmas hampers filled with enough food to last through the school holidays, along with a special gift for every child. These efforts ensure families experience comfort, dignity, and joy during the holidays.
This year, the Empty Stocking Fund Christmas Campaign received a remarkable $75,000 donation from the late Theresa Kohlberg, a lifelong Battlefords resident known for her generosity and dedication to local causes. In her passing, Theresa chose to give back once again, supporting five Battlefords charities. Her kindness serves as a powerful reminder of what community truly means every donation, big or small, helps fill a hamper, feed a family, and brighten a child’s holiday.
Food Banks Canada: Advancing the Standards of Excellence
Looking back on 2025, Food Banks Canada continues to be inspired by the collective progress made toward achieving the Standards of Excellence. More than 155 food banks across Canada have now received accreditation, reflecting a shared commitment to accountability, transparency, and high-quality service.
As the March 2026 deadline approaches, Food Banks Canada remains committed to supporting food banks and provincial associations. Updated Standards Guides and FAQs have been released to reflect recent changes, clarify accreditation requirements, and provide guidance on available supports.
Beginning January 2026, an extension process is available for eligible food banks requiring additional time to complete accreditation. Extensions will be granted only under limited and specific circumstances, ensuring continued access to grants while accreditation is finalized.
Celebrating Accredited Food Banks in Saskatchewan
We are proud to recognize Saskatchewan food banks that have achieved accreditation through Food Banks Canada. Out of 36 food banks in the province, 17 are now accredited, along with Food Banks of Saskatchewan.
Among those recognized is the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre, whose accreditation reflects a strong commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in service delivery.
As we move forward into 2026, we remain grateful for the dedication of staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who make this work possible. Together, we continue to strengthen food security and support communities across Saskatchewan.
